Waters We Fish
Big Spring Creek
The headwaters of Big Spring Creek begin along the north side of the Big Snowy Mountains south of Lewistown, MT, however most of the water supply that fills the stream's banks get pumped out of the ground at 64,000 gallons per minute at 52 degrees Fahrenheit year round, providing for optimal trout habitat. The spring is located at the State of Montana's Big Spring Creek Fish Hatchery, ~7 miles southeast of Lewistown. Spring Creek flows ~26 miles in a north / northwest direction until its' confluence with the Judith River (a tributary of the Missouri River). Even during peak irrigation season in the summer, there is enough water to safely and effectively float the creek in a 2-man raft.
Because of Spring Creek's constant water temperatures, there is a rich biodiversity of aquatic insects to feed the trout. The stream can be fished year-round with success. Even in the winter, midges are available on top and streamers can be stripped with success.
From mid June through October, dry fly fishing the various hatches or using terrestrial patterns is preferred. Stripping streamers moves the largest trout year round, and nymphing underneath the surface is very effective. In the summer, throwing mice patterns after dark is challenging, yet REWARDING!
other Central Mt Rivers
A few other rivers in Central Montana are also floatable options when water levels are right. Brett has floated many rivers all over Big Sky Country. A 13.5' Sotar Strike raft & a 16' Hyde drift boat are also available for floating larger bodies of water & for catering to two anglers. When water levels become too low, wade fishing some of the off the beaten path streams can put some nice fish in the net.
